Senior Mechanical Technician - Pwani
Purpose of the role
The Senior Mechanical Technician will be responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and installing production machinery and mechanical equipment to ensure efficient, safe, and uninterrupted factory operations. The role supports production by implementing preventive maintenance programs, minimizing equipment downtime, ensuring compliance with food safety standards, and optimizing machine performance.
Key Responsibilities
Operate, inspect, maintain, and repair production machinery and utilities, including boilers, compressors, generators, conveyors, dryers, steam systems, and cashew processing equipment.
Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, including lubrication, alignment, inspection, replacement of worn components, and maintenance record keeping.
Diagnose mechanical faults, respond to equipment breakdowns, and carry out timely repairs to minimize production downtime.
Support the installation, testing, commissioning, and handover of new machinery while ensuring all safety guards and protective devices are properly installed.
Monitor spare parts inventory, raise requisitions for required materials, and ensure proper storage and identification of spare parts and maintenance tools.
Ensure compliance with GMP, HACCP, BRC, and factory safety standards by maintaining hygienic work practices and preventing product contamination.
Inspect and maintain supporting utility systems, including steam lines, boilers, compressors, conveyors, dryers, belts, chains, bearings, and air pressure systems.
Maintain accurate maintenance logs, breakdown reports, and service records while supporting internal and external audits.
Monitor machine efficiency and energy consumption, recommending initiatives to improve equipment reliability, reduce maintenance costs, and optimize operational performance.
Collaborate with production and quality teams while providing guidance and technical support to junior technicians and maintenance helpers.
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical maintenance within an industrial manufacturing or food processing environment.
Proven experience in preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, installation, and repair of industrial production machinery and utilities.
Working knowledge of GMP, HACCP, BRC, and factory health and safety standards is highly desirable.
Strong mechanical troubleshooting, problem-solving, and analytical skills with the ability to work under pressure.
Good communication, organizational, and record-keeping skills with the ability to work effectively across cross-functional teams.
Experience supervising or guiding junior technicians is an added advantage.
Familiarity with cashew processing or food manufacturing operations will be an added advantage.
